Puro.earth Achieves Major Milestone: 1 Million Tonnes of CO₂ Removed

In the ever-evolving landscape of sustainability and climate action, Puro.earth has emerged as a pivotal player in the fight against climate change. This Helsinki-based carbon crediting platform has reached an incredible milestone—issuing over 1 million tonnes of verified carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits, known as CO₂ Removal Certificates (CORCs). This achievement not only underscores the platform's leadership in engineered carbon removals but also highlights the growing momentum of the carbon removal sector as a whole.

A Journey of Exponential Growth

Since its inception in 2019, Puro.earth has been at the forefront of certifying and issuing CORCs. These credits represent one metric tonne of CO₂ removed from the atmosphere and stored in durable solutions for at least 100 years. While it took nearly five years to reach 500,000 CORCs issued (Q1 2024), the platform doubled this number in just one year, hitting the 1 million mark in Q1 2025.

This exponential growth reflects the increasing demand for scalable, high-impact carbon removal solutions. With issuance rates accelerating, Puro.earth is on track to achieve its next million CORCs before the end of H1 2026.

Driving the Carbon Removal Market

Puro.earth’s methodologies have been instrumental in achieving this milestone. Two key approaches—Geologically Stored Carbon (GSC) and Biochar—account for the majority of CORCs issued.

  • Geologically Stored Carbon (34.3%): This includes innovative technologies like Direct Air Capture Carbon and Storage (DACCS) and Bio Energy Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS).

  • Biochar (34.1%): A versatile solution that not only sequesters carbon but also enhances soil health and agricultural productivity.

The United States leads the way in CORC issuances, contributing nearly 45% of the total, followed by Finland, Bolivia, and Brazil. This geographic distribution highlights the global nature of the carbon removal market and the strong presence of suppliers in these regions.

The Role of Buyers in Scaling Carbon Removal

The success of Puro.earth is not just a testament to its methodologies but also to the commitment of forward-thinking buyers. Corporations like Microsoft, Google, and Frontier Buyers have been instrumental in de-risking CDR technologies and enabling suppliers to scale their operations.

As the market matures, the next wave of buyers is expected to come from hard-to-abate sectors such as aviation, steel manufacturing, and shipping. Companies like SkiesFifty and Gigablue have already made significant commitments, signaling a shift in buyer sentiment towards durable, high-integrity carbon removal solutions.

A Collaborative Effort

Puro.earth’s achievement is a result of collaboration across the carbon removal ecosystem. Suppliers, buyers, and partners have come together to build a transparent and credible market for CORCs. As Antti Vihavainen, Vice Chairman of Puro.earth, aptly puts it:

“We want to thank the key players that have come together to build the CDR market with us: the courageous investors who ventured into the unknown, the pioneering entrepreneurs who chose innovation over business-as-usual, and the forward-thinking buyers whose commitments make everything move.”

Looking Ahead

The road ahead for Puro.earth is as ambitious as its past achievements. With the backing of Nasdaq, which acquired a majority stake in 2021, the platform is poised to accelerate the carbon removal industry further. Its focus remains on providing trusted, scalable solutions that help businesses meet their net-zero goals while driving real, lasting climate impact.

Why This Matters

The milestone of 1 million tonnes of CO₂ removed is more than just a number; it’s a significant step forward in the global effort to combat climate change. Engineered carbon removals, as demonstrated by Puro.earth, are an essential part of the solution, complementing natural methods like reforestation and soil carbon sequestration.
