LEGO Group’s Supplier Sustainability Program: A Bold Step Towards Net Zero

Transitioning a business into a sustainable and responsible entity begins with a deep understanding of its operations and emissions. For companies aiming to mitigate their environmental impact, identifying the sources of emissions is crucial. For many large corporations, Scope 1 and 2 emissions (direct emissions from owned sources and indirect emissions from purchased energy, respectively) are relatively straightforward to manage. However, the bulk of their carbon footprint often lies in Scope 3 emissions, which are indirect emissions arising from their supply chain activities across 15 categories.

In an interconnected world, achieving net zero cannot be done in isolation. Large organizations wield significant influence over their supply chains, and leveraging this influence is essential for driving down emissions. One exemplary company making strides in this area is the LEGO Group. Recently, LEGO launched its Supplier Sustainability Program to significantly reduce carbon emissions from its suppliers, who account for over 99% of the company’s Scope 3 emissions.

Chief Sustainability Officer, Annete Stube, encapsulated the urgency and collaborative spirit of the initiative: “To put it simply, a net-zero world is simply not possible unless we find solutions that are greater than our own operations. We will not be able to meet our sustainability targets alone – we have to work in partnership with our suppliers. We want children to inherit a healthy planet and there’s no time to waste.”

The Supplier Sustainability Program is an evolution of the Engage-to-Reduce program LEGO launched in 2014. The original program aimed to help suppliers report environmental data and lower their carbon, water, and forest impacts. The new program takes this a step further by requiring suppliers to set near-term emission reduction targets, demonstrating significant emissions savings related to product production by 2026 and extending into 2028 among other new requirements.

The LEGO Group’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in its ambitious goals: a 37% reduction in emissions by 2032 and achieving net zero by 2050. This new initiative is a critical component of LEGO’s climate action plan, addressing the substantial emissions generated by suppliers’ activities in raw material delivery, products, and services.

The Supplier Sustainability Program is not just about setting targets; it’s about creating a collaborative environment where LEGO and its suppliers work together towards a common goal. By aligning their efforts, they can drive significant reductions in emissions, ensuring that their products contribute to a healthier planet for future generations. Together, we can build a better, more sustainable future.
